Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Digital Health

The Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics in the Faculty of Medicine, at The University of British Columbia (UBC) invite applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Digital Health.

Tier 2 Chairs are five-year positions, renewable once, intended for exceptional emerging scholars who have the potential to lead in their fields. Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a full-time, tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at UBC. Normally, applicants for Tier 2 Chairs should be no more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree at the time of Chair nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

The Department of Pediatrics, located at BC Children’s Hospital, has training programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, and pursues research to make innovative advancements in knowledge and practice to improve health. The Department consists of physicians, scientists, allied health professionals and administrative staff trained in pediatric and allied child health disciplines. Department members include full-time, part-time and community-based pediatricians throughout the province. The Department’s mandate is to provide leadership and excellence in patient care, education, research and child advocacy.

The Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics (APT) consists of more than 500 physicians, scientists and teaching faculty who provide undergraduate and graduate programs in pharmacology and therapeutics, postgraduate residency programs and fellowships in anesthesiology. The Department hosts 3 residency programs in anesthesiology and pain medicine and provides provincially-distributed training.

The BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute, located at BC Children’s Hospital, is the largest research institute of its kind in Western Canada, where more than 300 Investigators form a dynamic and highly collaborative research community that aims to improve the health of children and their families. The Department of Pathobiology at the University of Guelph invites applications and nominations for a Canada Research Chair Tier II (NSERC) in Systems Approaches to Disease. The appointment will be tenure-track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Tier 2 Chairs are awarded for a five-year term and can be renewed once. Tier 2 CRCs are for emerging researchers acknowledged by their peers as world-class. A CRC Tier II Chair attracts funding of $600,000 over five years, with most of this funding allocated to support the Chair and the Chair’s program of research. This position will form part of a One Health cluster of researchers at the University of Guelph) working in an interdisciplinary manner at the interface of animal, human, and environmental health.

Exceptional emerging scholars, with the potential to become world leaders in a field related to Systems Approaches to Disease, are invited to apply. The successful candidate will have a PhD and post-doctoral training in a discipline related to animal health and disease research. Their work may involve any discipline related to Pathobiology, including mammalian pathology, comparative pathology, veterinary infectious diseases, microbiology, or immunology. Expertise and experience in applications of big data (including but not limited to transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, epigenomics and metabolomics) to delineate disease processes in animals is expected. Holding a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or another health professional degree will be an asset.

NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Plant Synthetic Biology

About the Position

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science seeks applications from outstanding scientists for an NSERC Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Plant Synthetic Biology.

Consistent with the gender equity goals of the Canada Research Chairs Program and the Department of Biological Sciences, this position is targeted to individuals who self-identify as women. The successful candidate will apply molecular and/or genetic engineering approaches to enhance crop value, select or develop new strains/products, and/or address environmental concerns. The ideal candidate will be interested in developing collaborations with local Niagara agricultural industries and taking advantage of existing research and development support through Brock’s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) and the Brock–Niagara Validation, Prototyping, and Manufacturing Institute (VPMI). There will be opportunities to collaborate with plant biologists in Biological Sciences as well as colleagues in the departments of Chemistry, Engineering, Computer Science, and elsewhere. Brock University is located a short drive from a cluster of research universities in southern Ontario.

The home department of Biological Sciences is a dynamic department within the Faculty of Mathematics and Science (see brocku.ca/mathematics- science/biology/). The department enjoys large and growing undergraduate and graduate student populations as well as active, diverse, and collaborative research faculty. Biological Sciences offers BSc, MSc, and PhD programs in Biological Sciences and in Biotechnology. Cross-appointments to other departments are also possible, including contributing to graduate programs currently being developed in the new Yousef Haj-Ahmad Department of Engineering.

The candidate’s laboratories are expected to be in the Cairns’ Family Health and Bioscience Research Complex, which includes a 2,500 square foot shared main wet lab with 600 square feet of shared HQP office space. There is an adjacent 2,000 square foot phytotron and an additional 1,000 square feet of ancillary research space that houses plant tissue culture facilities. Additional laboratory space may also be available as needed. Mass spectrometry and next-generation sequencing capabilities are available on campus.

The Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program

The successful candidate will be eligible to hold a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. The successful candidate will be supported to prepare a nomination to the next available deadline for the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program.

The Canada Research Chairs program recognizes outstanding scholars at all career stages and is a key mechanism for Canadian universities to attract and retain the best talent from around the world to achieve excellence in research and research training. Canada Research Chairs advance the frontiers of knowledge in their fields through their scholarly research, teaching, and supervision.

Tier 1 Chairs are tenable for seven years and renewable once for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. To meet the criteria of the program, individuals must demonstrate substantial accomplishments that have had major impact in their discipline at the international level. They also should have superior records of supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and are expected to attract and retain future researchers.

Nominations for Canada Research Chairs are subject to review and final approval through the CRC Program. Benefits associated with Chair appointments include teaching release and start-up research funds. A separate application may be made to the John R.   • A statement of strengths and experiences in supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion in science through research, curriculum, community outreach, and student support (suggested 1 page).
  • The names and contact information of three referees who could provide confidential letters of assessment that speak to the candidates’ suitability to hold a faculty position and Tier 1 CRC at Brock University.

Position Summary

The Computer Science (CS) department at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in conjunction with the Center of Bioinformatics and Quantitative Biology (CBQB), is seeking an outstanding faculty candidate in computational biology at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Candidates in all areas of computational biology are encouraged to apply.

The UIC CS department currently has 42 tenure-system faculty, 5 research faculty, and 17 clinical/teaching faculty, with strong and broad research agendas, ranging from machine learning, theory, database, and systems. Faculty at the CBQB conduct research in bioinformatics, biophysics, systems biology, and multi-scale modeling. There is a vibrant research environment in bioinformatics and computational biology at UIC, with well established collaborations among faculty from CS, CBQB, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. and College of Medicine.

We are seeking innovative and collaborative individuals who will develop his/her independent research programs in computational biology. Successful candidates will have ample opportunities to collaborate with faculty members from CS, CBQB, and other engineering departments, as well as basic science and clinical departments in the College of Medicine, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. There are additional collaboration opportunities with the University of Illinois Cancer Center, the Center for Clinical and Translational Science, and UI Hospital and Health Sciences at UIC.

The CS department is located in the heart of Chicago. Construction of a new building housing CS department is under way and is expected to open in 2023. The building will include 80 faculty offices, 16,000 square feet of classroom space, 23 shared student offices, numerous collaborative learning and teaching spaces, and a geothermal farm to assist with sustainable heating and cooling. The salary and start-up package will be highly competitive and commensurate with the level of excellence expected of successful applicants.

Candidates should have a PhD in Computer Science, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics or closely related fields, and the potential for excellence in research, teaching, and student mentoring. Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, University of Toronto -

The Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of computational biology. The appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of September 1, 2023.

We seek a colleague whose research interests complement and strengthen our existing scientific community, which encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative technology development. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of appointment, with an exceptional track record in computational biology with scholarly interests in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Candidate must also have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The candidate will receive institutional support to establish a research program that innovate and apply computational approaches for analysis and interpretation of large-scale datasets and that will benefit from being embedded in an interactive community of experimental and computational biologists. Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral training in computational sciences (computational biology, bioinformatics or quantitative biology).

The successful candidate is expected to pursue innovative research in computational biology at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence that can be demonstrated by the submitted research statement, publications in leading journals, invited scientific presentations, awards and accolades, and strong letters of references with endorsements from referees of high standing.

Candidates are also expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching. To this end candidates must provide a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, which should refer to previous teaching-related activities such as experience as a teaching assistant or course instructor, leading workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or awards for oral presentations and posters at conferences. Reference letters should indicate the candidate’s suitability for undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship. The candidate will actively participate in the research and teaching ecosystems of the Donnelly Centre and the Department of Molecular Genetics, where the successful candidate will have a graduate school appointment.
