The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus, invites applications for a full-time Lecturer position for a one-year term to lead the development of courses for a new program entitled: “MUlti-Scale multi-modal Image Computing for health (MUSIC)”.

The School of Biomedical Engineering is a partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science, acting as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology. The MUSIC program is funded by the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) CREATE program. Building on the established Biomedical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence (BMIAI) research cluster at UBC (https://bmiai.ubc.ca/) and its extensive connections with Canada’s burgeoning biotech industry, MUSIC responds to an acute need for a multi-faceted, data-driven approach to understanding the biological processes that lead to disease. With MUSIC training, over 100 highly qualified personnel (HQP) will be able to measure, manipulate, and analyze biomedical data at a wide range of physical scales, using advanced signal processing and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Through this program, we intend to create two graduate-level courses as follows, the development of which would be led by the Lecturer.

Responsibilities:

Biomedical Data Fundamentals:

In this course, an overview of molecular, cellular and clinical imaging, and omics technologies and their relationship with each other will be covered. This new course will cover various biological or medical imaging and omics modalities, including the advantages and limitations of each technology, and provide awareness and understanding of how they are brought together in modern biomedical studies to capture data from micro to macro scales. The course will have three modules: Module 1: Modern Biomedical Multi-Modal Multi-Scale Studies, Module 2: Molecular & Cellular Imaging and Omics, Module 3: Clinical Imaging. As part of this course, we will introduce weekly student-driven “Discovery” sessions, where students come together for a deep dive into all facets of multi-modal multi-scale data in relation to a specific pathology, facilitated by one or more post-graduates and faculty. These sessions will be continued in the next term, providing opportunities for trainees to acquire collaboration, communication, and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills on top of technical competencies.

Machine Learning (ML) in Medicine:

A lecture and project-based course focused on applying ML techniques to solve real biomedical problems. Weekly “Discovery” sessions will continue in this course by bringing ML to multi-modal multi-scale data.

Reporting to the Directors of the MUSIC program who in turn report to the Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering, the incumbent will be responsible for leading the development of the above-mentioned courses. The candidate will also be expected to coordinate the course lectures, teach some parts of the courses, make sure that there is connectivity between sessions and topics, solicit and coordinate projects, and guide the students throughout the project. The successful candidate will also participate in relevant service activities within the University and provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community, as assigned by the School Director.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in the area of machine learning, biomedical engineering, and biomedical imaging, or a closely related discipline, and must have or be able to obtain an EIT, P.Eng., or Eng.L. designation before teaching begins in January 2024. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, and the promise to achieve excellence in teaching. Candidates are expected to have excellent communication skills and working knowledge of modern teaching methods and supporting tools.
