Instructors

Learn about our team of talented instructors.

Along with the CBW Leadership, the core faculty members are responsible for the ongoing curriculum development and the management of the CBW workshops.
The following is a list of the CBW core faculty, and past and present instructors and invited lecturers.

Current Faculty and Instructors
Gregory develops and implements clinical genomic tests focusing on molecular profiling of tumour specimens for Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. His PhD from the University of Guelph explored the maize developmental transcriptome, showing how patterns of co-regulation can help us to understand the function of unannotated genes.
Lauren has an MSc in Biostatistics from the University of Toronto and has previously worked as a Biostatician for two pediatric psychiatric genetics labs at SickKids. She is currently an MSc student in Dr. Anna Goldenberg’s lab. In her work, Lauren is focused on developing and applying statistical machine learning methods primarily in the area of data integration for improved translational discovery in the fields of genetics and genome biology. Lauren has also created custom R programming and data analysis courseware and taught over 200 trainees and scientists in the SickKids research program.
Francis was one of the co-founders of the CBW in 1998. His teams were involved in the development of high throughput sequence analysis methods, as well as the development of platforms to integrate data from various open databases. Francis continues to be interested in computational biology and genomics, and the integration of all data types to help our understanding of biology.
As a Bioinformatics Specialist in the Research and Development team, Jose Hector is involved in maintaining, documenting, and upgrading the RNA-seq pipelines in GenPipes. He also collaborates in several research projects, mostly focusing on transcriptomics, genome assembly, and epigenomics.
Dr. Vasu Gautam is the senior scientist and Bioinformatics Manager at Wishart Node, University of Alberta. Vasu is intrigued by the diverse world of “omics” and their combined role in biological research, be it proteomics, genomics, or metabolomics. Vasu has worked in both academia and industry in the field of multi-omics. His interest has been to explore the different aspects of these “omics” groups and then combine this knowledge pool to address some of the most difficult questions in the field. Bioinformatics/computational biology has been a great tool in enhancing this capability and continuing his research. His current focus is the study of machine learning algorithms and their applications in different areas of metabolomics.
