Instructors

Learn about our team of talented instructors.

Along with the CBW Leadership, the core faculty members are responsible for the ongoing curriculum development and the management of the CBW workshops.
The following is a list of the CBW core faculty, and past and present instructors and invited lecturers.

Current Faculty and Instructors
Edmund is a bioinformatician within the genome informatics team at OICR, where he provides technical knowledge and expertise in genomic analysis. His main focus is developing pipelines and data wrangling for ICGC-ARGO (International Cancer Genome Consortium – Accelerating Research in Genomic Oncology).
After completing a postdoctoral position in Australia, Rob joins the team as a Bioinformatics consultant specializing in fungal/plant genetics and developing omics resources, strategies, and infrastructure for laboratories working with non-model organisms. He has more than a decade of experience working in genomics, and holds a PhD in bioinformatics from Curtin University.
Dr. Eduardo Taboada is an internationally recognized expert on the molecular epidemiology and genomics of Campylobacter jejuni. In 1999 he completed a Ph.D. in molecular genetics at the University of Ottawa and joined the National Research Council, to work on C. jejuni genomics. Since joining the Public Health Agency of Canada’s as a Research Scientist in 2006, he has developed a research programme focusing on bacterial comparative genomics, genome dynamics and the application of genomics approaches towards the study of the molecular surveillance and epidemiology of priority food- and water-borne bacterial pathogens. He leads the Campylobacter Genomics Laboratory at the National Microbiology Laboratory and is head of the Genomic Epidemiology Research Unit. In addition of being a co-principal investigator of a Genome Alberta-funded project on large-scale sequencing on Campylobacter in the Canadian poultry chain, he is a co-investigator on a Genome Canada-funded project on AMR emergence, transmission and ecology and a work package leader in the Government of Canada’s Genomics Research Development Initiative interdepartmental project on AMR.
Lusine received her Ph.D. in Mathematics under the supervision of prof. V. Bogachev from Moscow State University in the area of nonlinear stochastic equations for measures. She works in Dr. D. Wishart’s computational group, where she learned machine learning and Python and developed tools for applications in bioinformatics. She also works in research involving applications of EPR spectroscopy at the Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation.
Veronique is currently a bioinformatician applying pathway and networks analyses to high-throughput genomics data for OICR cancer stem cell program. Previously, she worked on characterizing the gene signatures of different types of leukemias using a murine model.
Dr. Wishart has active research programs in structural biology, nanobiology, synthetic biology, prion biology, bioinformatics and metabolomics. Some of his lab’s most significant contributions have been in the area of protein chemical shift analysis and the prediction of protein structure. Using advanced methods in NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, multi-dimensional chromatography and machine learning Dr. Wishart and his colleagues identified or found evidence for more than 8000 endogenous metabolites (Human Metabolome Database).
