Bioinformatics.ca Privacy Statement

This Privacy Statement applies to the websites administered by Bioinformatics.ca. Information collected through these websites falls into two categories: aggregate information and personal information.
Collection and use
Aggregate information is information from which individual user identities or characteristics have been removed. When a user accesses the Bioinformatics.ca website, aggregate information is collected automatically in order to better understand website traffic patterns (e.g., total number of visitors, most visited sections, peak traffic times). None of this information is analyzed in a personally identifiable manner.
Personal information is any information about an identifiable individual. When we collect personal information about you through the website, we do so only if you consent to provide it to us. Specifically, there are five ways we may collect personal information about you:
- If you register to join our mailing list, we collect your personal information in order to send you our newsletters and information about events;
- If you send us an inquiry through our website, we collect your name and email address in order to respond to you;
- If you register for an account with us, we collect your name and email address, as well as demographics if you consent to provide it to us;
- If as a registered user, you chose to be listed as an expert on our public database, we collect additional personal information including affiliation, location information, bioinformatics expertise, keywords and research interest to be displayed publicly on our website; and
- If as a registered user, you apply to attend a Bioinformatics.ca workshop or other training event, we may collect additional personal information including curriculum vitae, previous bioinformatics experience, research project and relevance of workshop to project, and personal expectations of the workshop. This information is required to administer that training event.
- For fee-based events, successful participants will be provided with an invoice and a link for payment. Payment transactions are handled by FreshBooks (2ndSite Inc.). Personal information provided as part of online credit card transactions are stored and processed on 2ndSite Inc. computers in Canada in compliance with applicable Canadian federal and provincial regulations.
You may unsubscribe from receiving any communications from Bioinformatics.ca, at any time, by sending a request to info@bioinformatics.ca or by using the unsubscribe option provided in the email you have received.
Disclosure
Bioinformatics.ca annually compiles reports for its funding stakeholders. Only aggregate count metrics are disclosed for reporting purposes.
Bioinformatics.ca will not disclose your personal information other than in the following three situations:
- When Bioinformatics.ca provides event registration services for a third party, Bioinformatics.ca will provide your registration information to the relevant event sponsor(s).
- When Bioinformatics.ca uses third parties, including those which may be based in the United States, for outsourcing purposes (e.g., administering mailing lists or event-related functions). In such circumstances, we use contractual means to ensure that these third parties protect your personal information in a manner comparable to Bioinformatics.ca practices; however where such information is stored or accessed in other countries it may be subject to the laws of those countries.
- When Bioinformatics.ca is required to respond to valid demands or requests from government authorities, courts or law enforcement.
Digital markers
Bioinformatics.ca websites use sessional digital markers (“cookies”), which are small text files stored by your browser on your computer or phone. Bioinformatics.ca uses cookies on its websites to allow for the integration of third-party services (e.g., Matomo), which require this information for their own analytics and measurement purposes. The cookies on Bioinformatics.ca’s websites do not allow Bioinformatics.ca or third parties to identify individuals and do not contain personal information and Bioinformatics.ca does not have access to the information in such third-party cookies. The third-party service providers that place cookies have their own privacy policies.
If you wish to disable cookies you may adjust your browser settings to reject digital markers, including cookies. This may affect the performance of some services on the site(s).
