Covid19-2020

07-04-2020 Information and advice for our participants in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops (CBW) team is closely monitoring the ongoing and evolving global Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, and the potential impact for our community around the world. We know the impact of COVID-19 is top of mind as it should be.

We have therefore decided to offer our 2020 season as an On-line only series of workshops. We have checked on the availability of our instructors, and we are happy to announce that we will be offering 8 of the 13 workshops we were planning to offer at various cities in Canada. While we continue to deliver the same high quality education as usual, we are now holding these 8 workshops via Zoom and with the help of other tools on the same days we had originally planned (except for one of the R workshops, which we are now only offering once, at the later date).

We are offering these workshops “live”, starting at 10:00 AM EDT (therefore 7 AM in Vancouver, and 11 AM in Halifax, and 30 min later in Labrador/ Newfoundland). We have also delayed the early registration deadline from April 14 to May 14th as this gives people more time to consider applying for the workshop. Those of you that have already applied to a workshop will be notified with the details if you are accepted. You don’t need to apply again. Once you are accepted, you will have the opportunity to confirm your attendance by paying for the workshop.

CBW recognizes the challenges we are facing and wants to respond through help and support for our community. We’ve decided to make things easier by reducing our prices and charging a unique price for all workshop, which will be C$249/student/workshop.

The Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops (CBW) team is closely monitoring the ongoing and evolving global Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, and the potential impact for our community around the world. We know the impact of COVID-19 is top of mind as it should be.

Has originally planned, CBW workshops selection and early registration deadline does not take place until after April 14 2020. While we hope conditions will improve as quickly as possible, our goal is to do everything we can to support the health and welfare of our community. On Tuesday April 14th we will announce what we are doing with the 2020 edition of the CBW. Meanwhile, people should apply to the workshops they want to attend. No funds are collected at registration, so registration before April 14 is a good thing, risk-free. We are currently exploring on-line options, which would be offered at a reduced rate.

Staying Healthy

Community members are encouraged to follow standard guidelines (here are guidelines from the World Health Organization) around staying healthy and preparing for potential travel restrictions and containment as follows:

  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Maintain social distancing
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Practice respiratory hygiene
  • If you have fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early
  • Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider, including local containment recommendations
