Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cancer Genomics

The Morrissy Lab in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, is seeking highly motivated scientists to join as Postdoctoral Fellows in the field of computational cancer genomics.

Successful candidates will be recent PhD / MD graduates with the ambition to tackle the complexity of tumor biology and evolution using computational analysis of data from cutting-edge experimental and sequencing efforts. The goal of genomic approaches (such as whole genome and RNA sequencing, single cell sequencing, etc) is to explore clinically relevant aspects of brain tumor biology using patient samples in a way that could lead to improvements in clinical outcomes, especially in the context of recurrent disease. Projects in the Morrissy lab are developed within a dynamic and collaborative environment with other researchers in the Charbonneau Cancer Institute, enabling access to state-of-the-art experimental approaches.


  • Perform integrative analyses of cancer ‘omics’ data (genome / transcriptome / epigenome)
  • Use and develop methods and strategies for quantifying and modeling tumour evolution in patient samples and pre-clinical models of disease
  • Evaluate molecular features of treatment response and resistance in context with clinical data, matched pre-clinical models of disease, and therapeutic opportunities.


  • Track record of creativity in developing analytic strategies, and a strong foundation of knowledge in one or more of the following: genomics, cancer biology, statistics.
  • Excellent computational skills as well as experience with analysis of large ‘omic datasets is highly desirable.
  • Self-motivated, have strong written and verbal communication skills in English, and evidence of scientific accomplishment via peer-reviewed publications.


  • Experience working in a Unix environment (shell scripting, using command-line tools)
  • Experience conducting genomic data analyses
  • Expertise in statistical analyses using R
  • Understanding of cancer cell biology is an asset

Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience and is competitive for postdoctoral research fellows. University of Calgary PDF-appointment guidelines state that the applicant must have been awarded a PhD or its equivalent within the five (5) years immediately preceding the PDF appointment or ten (10) years from the completion of an MD, DVM or equivalent.
