PhD positions in bioinformatics and machine learning for cancer genomics

Multiple PhD positions are available in bioinformatics/computational biology in the School of Biomedical Engineering and Dep. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC/Vancouver General Hospital. The incumbents will join an interdisciplinary team working on bioinformatics algorithms, cancer genomics and digital pathology (tissue images). Candidates are expected to have extensive experience in one or more of the following areas: bioinformatics, statistics, machine learning and image processing.   • Developing bioinformatics pipelines for analyzing bulk and single cell cancer genomic and transcriptomics datasets

  • Developing algorithms for modeling spatial heterogeneity in tumors from bulk and single cell genomic/transcriptomic datasets and their connection to tissue images

  • Quantitative analysis of spatial heterogeneity in ovarian, endometrial and synovial sarcoma

  • Senior members: participation in the preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.

  • Senior members: Participation in supervising junior lab members.


  • Degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering or similar.

  • Proven experience in analyzing data from high-throughput genomic and transcriptomics experiments

  • Experience with analyzing single cell genomic and transcriptomics data (experience with cancer datasets is a plus)

  • Knowledge of general machine learning algorithms for clustering, regression etc.

  • Knowledge of image processing and deep learning is a plus

  • Outstanding programming skills in Python and R.

  • Track record of development and implementation of novel algorithms in cancer genomics.

  • Extensive experience in utilizing bioinformatics software and libraries for alignment, variant calling, copy number inference etc.

  • At least 2 years of experience working with Linux computing clusters.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

  • Effective oral and written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

  • Outstanding publication record
