Junior Software Programmer

JOB SUMMARY A position contributes to programming and developing cutting-edge web-based visualization software in a wor1d-class cancer research institute. Placed in the lab of Dr. Sohrab Shah, the project entails developing a web application that enables scientists and clinicians to dynamically visualize and interpret large-scale cancer genomics data. The successful candidate will play a central role in programming a web-based visualization system consisting of a JavaScript frontnd and a data provider backnd in a Linux environment. This role in a multi-disciplinary research environment demands close collaboration with other programmers and database developers on the backnd components, and with end-user scientists on improving the user experience. This work will be used to support leading edge research in identifying genomic alterations that drive breast and ovarian cancers. The end product will be an open-source software system that is distributed to the broader international cancer research community.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS Working under the supervision of senior lab personnel and the Principal Investigator in Molecular Oncology.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR Exercises professional judgment in the overall software development process. Accountable for the generation of accurate analysis tools that will have significant research progress implications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED Supervision from Principle Investigator or designate. Results reviewed weekly for achievement of overall objectives.

SUPERVISION GIVEN None.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide first level programming for JavaScript components for our web-based cancer genomics visualization platform
  • Collaborate with other developers to integrate these components with a data provider backnd
  • Test and debug resulting software and execute a software testing plan including unit tests, documenting findings for review by senior staff
  • Assist with writing source code documentation and technical tutorials for end-users

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Degree in Computer Science (MSc or higher) is preferred. Minimum of one year experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. - Experience with front-end web technologies (JavaScript/HTML5/CSS), popular JavaScript libraries and frameworks (e.g. jQuery), and event-driven programming.

  • 2+ years experience working in a Linux/UN IX operating system environment preferred
  • Eager to learn new things and contribute to a dynamic cancer research environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Familiarity with the following is an asset:

  • Visualization and UI design patterns and principles
  • Interfacing with back-end web services (using JSON, AJAX, REST)
  • Java
  • Python
  • Git, Subversion, CVS or other code versioning management software
  • Previous experience working/programmi ng in a bioinformatics environment with next-generation sequencing
