Molecular Data Management Specialist

We are seeking a self-starter with experience and passion for bioinformatics and molecular data management.

You, our ideal candidate, are looking for a small and dynamic multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers who work together with minimal hierarchy and red-tape. You are prepared to bring your drive, your experience, and your passion to contribute at all levels to the entire team. Indoc Research builds and manages complex medical research infrastructure for collaborators and clients. We bring together prominent research organizations across the country, including the Neuroimaging Group at the Rotman Research Institute, the Centre for Advanced Computing at Queen’s University, and the Electronic Health Information Laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Together we have created large scale informatics platforms involving diverse and complex data modalities (e.g. imaging, proteomic, genomic, clinical assessments) across multiple disease areas (e.g. neurodegeneration, depression, cancer).

As part of the Indoc Research Molecular data management team, you will have the opportunity to stretch and develop your bioinformatics and data management skills to a whole new level. You will work with a wide array of molecular data modalities from expression data to proteomics to next generation sequencing. As the Molecular Data Management Specialist you will work closely with researchers across the country to assist them in wrangling, organizing and federating their data across multiple sites and studies. Additionally, you will work with Indoc team members to strategize on future development efforts to enhance the molecular data management and analytics capacity of the platform.

This position will provide the successful candidate with opportunities to acquire hands on experience in technical aspects of development and maintenance of a molecular data management infrastructure as part of a larger research informatics system. The Molecular Data Management Specialist will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Configuring databases, data dictionaries and bioinformatics tools to house and organize metadata and data outputs from molecular assays and processing pipelines
  • Organizing and marshalling molecular datasets from researcher laboratories to centralized databases
  • Conducting quality control to test databases and validate molecular datasets
  • Developing data modality specific modules for LabKey
  • Assisting in the design and development data query interfaces, incorporating molecular data with clinical, imaging and other data types
  • Developing guidelines and standard operating procedures
  • Developing and implementing relevant data standards

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in bioinformatics or Equivalent

  • Experience working with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of basic concepts of molecular biology
  • Well versed in Next Generation Sequencing technologies and workflows
  • Experience working with a variety of ‘omics’ data types
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics standards including data formats, pipelines, and best practices
  • Understanding of general data management best practices
  • Basic knowledge of study design, health data privacy and security and regulatory compliance would be an asset

Other Skills:
