Research Associate (genomic data science)
Dr Martin Smith’s team (www.therealsmithlab.com) is interested in developing new strategies for molecular medicine that integrate bioinformatics and real-time nanopore sequencing. Our research projects aim to translate the enormous potential of portable genomic technologies into new solutions for precision medicine.
The incumbent will be closely involved in the advancement of a multidisciplinary, international and collaborative research group, which is determined to develop innovative solutions for molecular medicine. The Smith Laboratory manages several Oxford Nanopore sequencing devices and a high-performance GPU server, amongst other research equipment.
Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the principal investigator, the incumbent will be responsible for providing computational support to the laboratory’s research activities.
More specifically the candidate will be responsible for: • Processing and analysis of Oxford Nanopore Technologies data; • Help plan and implement computational experiments; • Manage shared software and data; • Purchasing, installing and managing computer hardware related to the acquisition, analysis and storage of high-throughput sequencing data; • Apply, develop, implement and optimize algorithms, software or scripts; • Helping other members of the laboratory with bioinformatics analyses; • Help prepare project reports and scientific articles; • Documenting and archiving programs, software, scripts and data processing pipelines; • Performing any other tasks assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Qualifications:
● Graduate degree in computer/data science, bioinformatics, genomics or software engineering (candidates with an undergraduate degree and 3+ years of related professional experience are also encouraged to apply); ● Experience with genomic data (knowledge of transcriptomics an advantage); ● Proficiency with data processing and management; ● Mastery of Python and BASH/UNIX; ● Experience with R statistical programming language; ● Experience with version control software (git); ● Familiarity with C, C++ and Java; ● Familiarity with TensorFlow or Pytorch; ● Familiarity with biostatistics; ● Versatility and capacity to multitask; ● Excellent problem-solving skills; ● Strong organisational, time and project management skills; ● Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary team; ● Proactive and capable of working autonomously with minimal supervision.
