Bioinformatics Staff focused on bioinformatics training and education

Full time continuing staff position at the University of Toronto Centre for the Analysis of Genome Evolution & Function (CAGEF www.cagef.utoronto.ca) for a Bioinformatics Technician responsible for:

1) Developing and presenting bioinformatic training courses, workshops, and related online training material for graduate students and postdocs (e.g. ‘Introduction to R’, ‘Introduction to Python’, ‘RNA-Seq Analysis’, etc.).

2) Assisting with experimental design for CAGEF clients (e.g. determining the best sequencing and analysis strategy based on experimental needs) analyzing client data, preparing written and verbal reports and presentations to summarize analytical results, and assisting in the preparation manuscripts and publication quality figures.

Employee Group: USW Appointment Type: Budget - Continuing Schedule: Full-Time Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: USW Pay Band 09 - starting at $58,242 with an annual step progression to $74,482. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.

Responsibilities:

Developing content for instructional workshops Drafting and editing training content Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process Analyzing datasets Analyzing and writing program scripts to extract, reformat and analyze data Formatting manuscripts according to publication guidelines Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected Serving as a resource to others by providing (non-supervisory) job-related guidance

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in bioinformatics, computer biology, biostatistics, biology, or equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum three years of recent and relevant post-graduate experience with bioinformatics, computational biology,genomics, and biostatistics Hands on experience with genome analysis and bioinformatics scripting Experience with next-generation (e.g. lllumina) genome data management and analysis Experience with Unix/Linux, Python, and R Experience developing and presenting bioinformatics training material Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including tact and diplomacy in dealing with others Excellent organization and time management skills Excellent decision making skills with good judgment Excellent attention to details with high level of accuracy Good presentation and public speaking skills Demonstrated ability to learn in a fast-paced environment Excellent multitasking skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlines
