Master student in phenomics / pheno-informatics / image analysis

Applicants for a master student position in phenomics / pheno-informatics / image analysis are invited to join the Mcgill Plant Phenomics Platform - MP3 - (http://mp3.biol.mcgill.ca) at McGill University, Montreal. This project led by Dr. Bureau and Dr. Blanchette (http://biology.mcgill.ca/faculty/bureau/ and http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~blanchem/) aims to integrate genomics and phenomics in order to map phenotypes and gene functions.

The MP3 boasts a LemnaTec Scanalyzer HTS unit for plants grown, fungi, insects or small aquatic/terrestrial organisms such as mosquito larvae or nematodes of fish embryos on plates and small potted plants and a LemnaTec Scanalyzer 3D unit for larger potted plants housed in a greenhouse room within our Phytotron. Both units are equipped with multiple sensors (HTS: visible, UV, thermal-IR, near infrared (NIR) and laser scanner; 3D: visible, thermal-IR, NIR) and designed for high sample and analysis throughput. Phenotyping is considered a new bottleneck to genotype-phenotype mapping. However, a key challenge for image-based phenotyping platforms is to transform the image into meaningful phenotypic data, specially, for the Canadian/ Quebec crops.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate research topic will be to develop different algorithms to extract agricultural important phenotypic information from the data collected through the MP3 sensors during the individual experiments.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in computer science, bioinformatics or equivalent with strong programming skills preferable in Java and R. An interest in solving biological problems is expected.
