Bioinformatician - metagenomics

The Bioinformatician in microbial metagenomics will develop new methods and support the continued development of approaches for resolving genomes from metagenomes (16S and shotgun), performing comparative and functional genomics analyses, and curating pan-genomic sequence databases. The position will commence as soon as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


Works closely with the PI and other members of the lab to develop and troubleshoot software Maintains compute environments that enable standardized, replicable analyses Develop new approaches for 16S/shotgun analysis Prepares software packages (including source code, help documents/wikis, and web or GUI interfaces) for public dissemination Providing basic assistance to users in pipeline execution and interpretation of results. Provides bioinformatics support and training to research staff and trainees with varying computer science backgrounds


Master / PhD in a relevant area (Computer science, Bioinformatics). Informal enquires of interested candidates with other backgrounds (for example statistics) are also welcome Excellent understanding of concepts and principles of molecular biology and next-generation sequencing Practiced understanding of how to develop complex software packages and bioinformatics pipelines Experience with microbiome bioinformatic analysis tools Knowledge of at least one scripting language (i.e. Python) Fluency with Unix Proficiency with a statistical language such as R Demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis Experience with data management and dataset manipulation A firm understanding of relational database concepts Strong verbal and written communication skills (fluency in French or English is necessary) Excellent time management skills Demonstrated communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills Demonstrated ability to carry out research projects involving microbial sequence data Peer-reviewed publications in the field is an asset, or demonstrated ability to publish research work in peer-reviewed journals
