NSERC Canada Research Chair Tier 2 - Bioinformatics/Computational Biology, Assistant/Associate Professor Tenure Track

The Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Computer Science at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario invite applications for an NSERC Canada Research Chair Tier 2 position in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The start date for this position can be as early as January 1, 2020, but is negotiable with the Faculty Dean.


The successful candidate for this Assistant/Associate Professor position will be supported to prepare a nomination to the next available deadline for the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Program. Nominations for Canada Research Chairs are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. Benefits associated with Chair appointments include teaching release and a research stipend. Appointment as an Assistant/Associate Professor is not contingent upon the outcome of the CRC nomination.


Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars, typically those who have been active researchers in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The ideal candidate must have expertise in both biological science and computer science, being active in research from both disciplines. Applicants should have a completed PhD and post-doctoral training that involves research in some combination of the following areas of interest. Desired expertise in biological sciences includes, but is not limited to, biological systems and network modelling, population genomics, proteomics, structural biology, metabolomics, or computational biology. Desired expertise in computer science includes algorithms, computational intelligence, machine learning, data mining, modelling, optimization, or data analytics. The candidate should have demonstrated evidence of, or potential for, external research funding; be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching; and have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate student supervision at all levels of study.

The successful candidate should feel equally at home in both the Biological Sciences and Computer Science departments. They will be expected to collaborate with faculty from both departments and to teach senior undergraduate and graduate level research-oriented courses suitable to both departments. The successful candidate will have opportunities to network with several closely related research groups on campus beyond the Departments of Biological Sciences and Computer Science, such as in the Centre for Biotechnology, Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Environmental Sustainability Research Centre, Centre for Vector-Borne Disease, and Centre for Neuroscience.
