Researcher / Software Developer

We seek an individual highly motivated by the development of computational software and resources dedicated to the analysis of biological data. The successful candidate will be part of our multidisciplinary team implementing bioinformatics tools to support our research. This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated individual to join our dynamic team. We are looking for applicants excited about combining computer science and life sciences. Our computational biology research programme focuses on gene expression regulation and the mechanisms by which it can be disrupted in human diseases such as cancers. In a nutshell, the group develops and applies computational approaches to analyze multi-omics data to study the binding of transcription factors to DNA and gene expression dysregulation in diseases.

The ideal candidate will be collaborative, independent, with strong enthusiasm for science, and should have experience in developing, deploying, and maintaining bioinformatics tools and resources dedicated to the analysis of large-scale genomics data. The position is open to applicants with a background in computational biology/bioinformatics, computer science, or related fields. Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will develop, maintain, fix, and upgrade our bioinformatics pipelines, tools, and resources.

Qualifications:

Essential requirements and skills:

  • PhD degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, or computer science or a MS degree (or equivalent) with at least 3 years of experience in bioinformatics/software development.
  • Proven ability to implement bioinformatics pipelines, tools, and resources
  • Broad experience with multiple programming languages (Python, R, bash, etc.)
  • Experience with the git version control system
  • Experience with MVC development frameworks (e.g. Django or Flask)
  • Experience with relational database development (MySQL/MariaDB)
  • Ability to collaborate with researchers from different fields and at different career stages
  • Willingness to be part of a team to share knowledge and skills
  • Experience with genomics data sets
  • High drive for science
  • Proficiency in English

Advantageous skills:

  • Experience with a workflow management tool like Snakemake
  • Knowledge of NoSQL databases (MongoDB or other)
  • Relevant publication record
  • Knowledge of eukaryotic gene expression regulation
  • Knowledge of molecular biology

Additional Information

The group was established in 2016 and focuses on gene expression regulation and the mechanisms by which it can be disrupted in human diseases such as cancers. In a nutshell, the group develops and applies computational approaches to analyse multi-omics data to study gene expression dysregulation. The group has a long-standing commitment to the development of open-access computational software and resources like JASPAR and UniBind (see https://mathelierlab.com/software-databases/). The Computational Biology & Gene Regulation group is funded through a start-up package from the NCMM, a Young Research Talent grant from the Research Council of Norway, and an open call grant from the Norwegian Cancer Society.
