ABOUT BIONET ALBERTA Bioinformatics and computational biology (B/CB) is a rapidly evolving area of the life sciences that utilizes diverse approaches to interrogate and interpret large, complex data sets. In partnership with Genome Canada, Genome Alberta is launching BioNet Alberta, a diverse network-based approach to building provincial capacity in the area of B/CB. The Network is structured around 4 key Pillars: (1) Network Management, Outreach, and Knowledge Exchange; (2) Training and Development; (3) Computational Solutions and Tool Development, and (4) Implementation of a Pan-Alberta Service Platform. This multi-tiered approach will provide a distributed platform to develop a more cohesive genomics and B/CB community that is expected to enhance research and development capacity. Fostering relationships between unconnected groups will yield novel collaborative opportunities that will improve the success rate of Alberta researchers in national level B/CB competitions.

ROLE The Network Manager will oversee the management of the pan-provincial activities in conjunction with the Network Lead, and act as the point of contact between Genome Alberta and the Network. The position will be located at the University of Lethbridge, in the Canadian Province of Alberta, with the Network Lead, but travel engagements and collaborations with other Campus Alberta institutions (Universities of Calgary and Alberta) are expected, potentially exceeding 10% of employment time. This individual is responsible for: • supporting the Network Lead in building provincial bioinformatics capacity, capabilities and collaborations • implementing financial and technical reporting requirements across Network organizations • serving as the point of contact for Network partners, institutional financial services, departments and external parties • serving as the point of contact for Genome Alberta • Support the Network Leader in all BioNet related activities

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP As a key member of the Management Team, the Network Manager will report to the Network Leader but will have direct linkages to regional Network representatives at other Alberta Organizations and to the Genome Centre representatives.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Oversee the execution of the Network’s strategic plan and activities, including planning networking events, coordinating training workshops, and capitalizing on regional opportunities for the benefit the stakeholder community o Assist in the development and implementation of administrative systems to support management, track progress, and capture relevant outcomes of Network activities • Work with Network Lead and regional Network representatives to manage budgets and track the disbursement and use of funds for approved Network activities at all locations sites (cash and in-kind funding and co-funding). o Prepare financial reports and explanations of variance for key stakeholders o Prepare quarterly cash-flow forecasts for activities in alignment with the milestones in the approved research plan • Coordinate and support Network activities by facilitating introductions and promoting collaboration amongst pertinent stakeholders including institutions, industrial partners, and co-funders o Manage relationships with all relevant research platforms, groups and other service providers in the province o Facilitate Network communications between internal and external stakeholders • Monitor and report on progress, issues, risks, bottlenecks, and mitigation plans to the Network Leader and key team members o Track and coordinate formal reporting to Genome Alberta on any changes to the Network plan that may affect milestones, deliverables, schedule or budget o Track and report on performance of impact-related aspects of the Network (e.g. communications and commercialization activities) • Develop and maintain a Network website to disseminate activities, provincial asset maps, employment and funding opportunities • Coordinate and prepare components of all change documents, including Scope Change, Investigator Change, Financial Adjustment etc. • Prepare project end final reports and revisions in concert with the Network Leader and regional Network representatives • Fulfill other administrative and financial requests of funders or other relevant stakeholders to ensure the project’s successful completion • Support the local BioNet hub activities and operations at the University of Lethbridge • Assist the Network Leader in all activities related to BioNet and in the management of the network and the local BioNet office.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES • Understanding of the application of genomics and bioinformatics technologies • Detail oriented individual with expert project management skills • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines in a dynamic team environment • Excellent interpersonal skills for developing partnerships and collaborations • Adequate financial management skills (preferred)

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • A degree, with appropriate work experience, in a relevant field of research. Academic and/or industrial experience in a relevant field would be regarded as an asset. • Demonstrated experience in project management including financial aspects. • Understanding of barriers to technology translation and application of ‘big-data’ analyses • Experience engaging stakeholders across academia, government and industry (preferred) • Previous experience in multi-institution large scale projects (preferred)

The expected salary range for this position is $70,000 to $78,000 per annum, commensurate with the experience of the successful candidate. This is a term position with an expected duration of three years.
