Research Assistant/Associate in Molecular Microbiology

Experience in qPCR and bioinformatics is required and some understanding of microbial ecosystems would be an advantage. You will contribute to the analysis of food and fecal samples, including DNA, RNA, protein and metabolite isolation from pure and mixed communities of microbes, as well as preparing libraries for sequencing and analyzing the data using multivariate statistics. Microbial isolates will be subtyped and whole genome sequencing carried out with selected representatives. The research program will interface with related disciplines such as food science, molecular biology and genetics, as well as animal and nutritional sciences. Approaches included are metabolomics, proteomics, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to understand the impact of microbial interactions on product quality and gastrointestinal function. The contract will be for one year, with renewal conditional on performance and continued funding availability.

Responsibilities:

• You will work closely with the principal investigator, postdoctoral scientists, graduate and undergraduate students in planning and carrying out research protocols in the defined research areas. • You will assist with other research activities including: coordination and operation of the research program, undergraduate and graduate student training; • You will carry out duties related to managing purchases, as well as preparation of reports and sections of manuscripts for publication.

Qualifications:

• BSc/MSc in Microbiology, Bioinformatics or related field; • Excellent written and oral communication skills; • Ability to focus on repetitive tasks and to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
