Software Developer I

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) is seeking a Software Developer to join the JBrowse2 project teams within the Computational Biology program. JBrowse2 (https://jbrowse.org/) is the second iteration of an advanced open-source genome visualisation and annotation engine that is widely used by human and model organism system genomic databases. The software developer will interact with peers in an international team of software developers and bioinformaticians in order to add new cancer-related visualisation and analytic features to the software. Learn more about working at OICR here. The position is based in Toronto, but depending on the evolving COVID-19 pandemic may be work-from-home with occasional visits to the Toronto office. As such, experience with, and access to, a recent Linux desktop or laptop computer with camera and microphone would be an asset. You will be provided with suitable equipment otherwise. Note that though the position is posted as a 2 year contract, it may be extended for additional years depending on the availability of pending grant funding.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in the design, developing and testing of JBrowse2 enhancements; • Develop stable, performant, and well-documented software under the guidance of the managers of the JBrowse2; • Assist in the preparation of talks, posters and online documentation for use by the project teams. Opportunities to personally present will be offered periodically; • Participate in virtual and physical team meetings; • Create, maintain, and debug secure distributed infrastructure on cloud computing platforms; and • Keep up to date with latest software development frameworks, tools and paradigms.

Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree or higher in bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology or computer science; • Up to and including two years of relevant work experience; • Practical programming experience with web-based applications; • Experience with the following web technologies: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, TypeScript, React.js, Mobx-state-tree, RxJS; • Experience with a package manager such as NPM or Yarn; • Experience with a continuous integration platform such as TravisCI would be an asset; • Experience with GraphQL would be an asset; • Proven ability to work in small developer teams. Experience with geographically distributed teams a plus; and • Excellent skills in written and verbal communications.
