Research Associate

The Research Associate provides bioinformatics and lab support for research projects in the Bioinformatics Technology Lab (BTL) / Genome Sciences Centre - BC Cancer through the development and execution of bioinformatics analysis protocols and identifies novel therapeutic candidates by mining sequencing data from public repositories and those generated from our genome and transcriptome sequencing projects. The successful applicant will work in the laboratory to test the therapeutic candidacy of novel compounds while also working independently in a cross-disciplinary environment and participating as a project team member on specific genome research projects to develop and test bioinformatics pipelines and laboratory protocols.


Key Accountabilities • Develop and implement analysis pipelines for DNA/RNA sequence data analysis and mining • Work on complex biological problems that require in-depth analysis of sequence data • Collaborate with the Group Leader, Computational Biologists, and Scientists to develop and test bioinformatics pipelines, laboratory protocols and assays • Conduct literature reviews and provide input and recommendations to managers • Prepare documentation in accordance with prescribed standards (eg. Protocols, SOPs) • Participate in lab meetings and present work for review by others • Provide contributions to the preparation and/or presentation of research manuscripts • May provide day-to-day work direction to others


Qualifications • Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Biochemistry or a related field • Molecular biology laboratory skills are essential for this position • Experience in microbial and eukaryotic cell culture techniques, cell imaging, peptide biochemistry, nucleic acid extraction, and preparation of DNA/RNA sequencing libraries will be considered an asset • Minimum 2-year experience scripting in Python. Additional languages considered assets (R, PERL, etc) • Experience with the Unix/Linux environment and version control practices and tools • Experience with analyzing large datasets (GB+ scale) • Knowledge of next-generation sequencing data analysis (DNA, RNA) preferred
