1) to establish a profile of A. baumannii isolates present in the Middle East since the 1990’s (MLST, AMR genes, phylogeny …); 2) to participate with the principal investigator and a PhD student in Anthropology in correlating results of our analyses in point 1) with socio-historical data (antibiotic use, timing and location of armed conflicts, environmental toxicity …).

Additional Information

Scientific relevance

Results from this research will enable:

a) to enrich our understanding of the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant isolates of A. baumannii; b) to identify unsuspected risk factors contributing to AMR in order to better guide interventions to limit its impacts; c) to validate the advantages of an interdisciplinary bio-historical methodology.

This project is financed by the New Frontiers in Research Fund of Canada (250K$). Selected students are highly encouraged to submit applications for training awards to funding agencies. Bursaries are available depending on student profiles.
