Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, Joint Genome Institute (JGI, Division has an opening for a Microbial Genome Research Scientist to join the Microbial Genome Program and Single Cells Group.

The Research Scientist will contribute to programmatic initiatives in the areas of bacterial and archaeal genomics with emphasis on single cell sequence data. The successful candidate will be expected to develop new scientific directions and lead cutting-edge research efforts in support of JGI’s Strategic Plan and Department of Energy (DOE) mission areas in biogeochemistry, carbon cycling, and bioenergy. The Research Scientist will also be expected to support a broad portfolio of JGI User Science within the microbial genomics portfolio and support an array of administrative production-related activities under the general supervision of the Microbial Genome Program Head.

What You Will Do: • Develop new scientific directions in line with JGI’s Strategic Plan and lead cutting-edge research efforts in the areas of microbial genomics and ecology, phylogenetic diversity, function-driven single-cell genomics and inter-organismal interactions. • Independently troubleshoot and problem-solve JGI User microbial genomics projects to facilitate high quality analysis results and insightful biological interpretation. • Design, benchmark, and apply bioinformatics software to enable analysis and interpretation of genomic data for JGI’s user community in line with the Program’s strategic objectives and goals. • Support ongoing JGI User Science, Community Science Program (CSP), and Facilities Integrating Collaborations for User Science (FICUS) projects through requests for custom analyses in line with the Program’s strategic objectives and goals, as well as initiate new projects in collaboration with the User community. • Work in a high-performance computing environment and interact with a team of computer scientists, software developers and postdoctoral researchers to develop new methods and tools for large-scale microbiome data analysis. • Support research & development activities in collaboration with JGI’s project management office, production teams, and Genomes Online Database (GOLD) and Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG) teams to ensure data handling and bioinformatics workflows for microbial genome data meet high quality standards and remain state-of-the-art. • Work collaboratively with JGI’s QA/QC and genome assembly teams to ensure workflows of microbial genome products remain state-of-the-art and methods descriptors up to date.


What is Required: • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience beyond the highest degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field • Demonstrated extensive expertise and track record in microbial genomics and ecology. • Proven capacity to do innovative and applied work in highly complex and broad-reaching scientific areas. • Experience establishing effective collaborations and interacting with members of diverse scientific and informatics communities. • Experience and skill in preparing research publications. • Deep knowledge in microbial metabolism and sequence-based metabolic reconstruction. • Understanding of standard sequencing analysis methods (assembly, gene calling, functional annotation) and phylogenetic analysis methods (multiple sequence alignment, tree building). • Extensive knowledge and experience with complex bioinformatics methods and tools, with significant research accomplishments, including a proven publication record. • Strong and effective communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external staff, users and collaborators. • Proven ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines. • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical skills to make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems.

Desired Qualifications: • Ph.D in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline with a minimum of 3 years postdoctoral work experience. • Able to program in Python, Perl, Java, and read/decipher C/C++. • Experience in customer-service oriented work environments.

Notes: • This is a full time, 2 year career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. • This position may be subject to a background check.
