Bioinformatics Business Systems Advisor

Who we are: Health Canada (HC) is the federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health. Within HC is the Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch (HECSB), a science and regulatory organization focusing on a broad spectrum of issues critical to Canadians’ health and safety. HECSB activities are directed at safeguarding the health of Canadians through research, policies and regulations that address chemicals, environmental contaminants, consumer products, tobacco, alcohol and controlled substances.

You will manage a team who supports IT solutions for a diverse range of needs such as the Chemicals Management Plan and the Cannabis Legalization Regulatory Branch.


As the Bioinformatics Business Systems Advisor, you will provide expert advice and analysis on the nature and extent of optimal innovative information management (IM)/IT solutions integral to the delivery of the scientific and regulatory programs. You will lead, develop and manage solutions for capturing and maintaining business, science and regulatory data, and related business intelligence solutions including development of supporting objects (e.g. views, data marts, functions, procedures) and interfaces using common tools (e.g. Postgres, SQLDeveloper, Python).


Your abilities: Excellent time management and organizational skills to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, changing environment. Strong communication and negotiation skills and the ability to tell stories with data in both technical and plain language. Ability to identify key issues in a complex situation and come to the heart of the problem quickly. Ability to guide and motivate a cross-functional team including program staff, scientists and software developers Ability to navigate and leverage the red tape of the government to find means to deliver solutions in spite of organizational barriers in a timely manner.

Your acquired experience and knowledge : 5-10 years of experience in understanding business needs, develop predictive models and deliver data-driven analytical solutions that solve client problems in a science-based environment.

Knowledge: APIs, SQL, Agile methods

Your education: Essential: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in natural, physical or applied sciences. Desirable: Master in bioinformatics/cheminformatics or relevant graduate degree in computer science

Your linguistic profile Advanced English/French bilingualism (reading, writing, speaking).
